Close your eyes. Turn around 3 times to disorient yourself. Wait 10 seconds. Open your eyes. What exactly do you see? Does it please you? Does it excite you? Does it scare you? Does it calm you? Does it make you mad? Does it make you happy? Does it make you sad? Does it make you anxious? Does it make you inhale? Does it do anything?

Well, the whole point is to look at your home or office and really evaluate what is working for you and what is not. Don’t get emotional. Simply assess the situation, and determine whether you want to change it. For instance, if you look at a wall and a piece of art feels “old”; it has been up forever and you want to change this…… take it down and promise yourself that you will replace it within one week. Say your gaze lands on your desk and there is a pile of papers that has been there for longer than a week (ahem)….. walk over to the desk and pick up the pile of papers and actually move the pile to another surface. Then, promise yourself that within the next 24 hours you will go through the papers and file them. What if you see your bed, and it is unmade, and your pillows are all flat and don’t have any puff to them anymore. Walk over and remove the pillows and put them by your front door. Promise yourself that within the next 48 hours, you will get to Bed Bath and Beyond, and treat yourself to some new fluffy pillows. And also, BTW, you will make your bed.

You can do this one step at a time. It is not a colossal undertaking, just one simple action and one simple promise. The ACTION is important, because you have to get past the thought, which we have all the time. “Oh, I have to do something about such and such”. The ACTION brings you further into the world of DOING. And the most important piece is, of course, the PROMISE. The promise that you will put yourself first and that you will dig into areas of avoidance.

I engage in this sort of process in my interior design business every day, and it has helped me to overcome feelings of being drowned by the details. I get up and I DO. Believe me, it works and it is contagious and you will find yourself doing it again. Because when you do it, it feels GREAT!
